What You Will See

You are provided with a spectacular, bird's-eye perspective that perfectly captures both the natural and historical elements of the South Rim. From this vantage point, you will see the full sweep of the canyon's colorful vastness, but the view is most famous for its incredible clarity over the steep, zigzagging descent of the Bright Angel Trail. You can trace the trail's entire winding path 3,000 feet down to the Tonto Plateau, and often spot hikers and mule trains making their way along the switchbacks. What is unique about this viewpoint is its simultaneous view of the sheer wilderness and civilization; by looking east, you can easily spot the historical buildings of Grand Canyon Village, including the iconic roof of the El Tovar Hotel and the Kolb Studio, offering a framed look at the canyon's deep human history right alongside its geological grandeur.

Approximately 8.2 miles from Red Feather Lodge. Allow at least 3-4 hours to see the viewpoints along Hermit Road.

Good to Know Before You Go

Viewpoint is only accessible by shuttle bus, walking or biking from March thru October. Last shuttle typically leaves about 30-60 minutes after sunset. Drive your vehicle to the viewpoint from November - February (weather permitting).
