What You Will See
This is one of the first major overlooks along Hermit Road, which juts out over the gorge to offer an expansive, unobstructed 180-degree panorama of the Grand Canyon's vastness. From this vantage point, you will see a spectacular array of mesas and buttes, the winding Tonto Trail far below, and on a clear day, one of the first noticeable glimpses of the Colorado River along this stretch of the rim. What makes Maricopa Point unique is its dual focus on natural beauty and controversial industrial history, as interpretive panels explain and point to the visible remnants of the defunct Orphan Lode Mine—once one of the country's richest sources of uranium—which are located right on the nearby rim. This combination of stunning, sweeping views and a tangible connection to the area's mining past provides a distinct and memorable experience, often with fewer crowds than its more famous neighbors.
