What You Will See
Located along the eastern portion of Desert View Drive, you are met with one of the most comprehensive and rewarding panoramas on the South Rim. The view spans a wide arc of the inner canyon, prominently displaying an expansive stretch of the Colorado River twisting far below, a sight often obscured at other viewpoints. From this high elevation, you can clearly see the dramatic temple and butte formations, including the striking Unkar Delta, an ancient alluvial terrace where Ancestral Puebloan people once farmed. The truly unique feature of Lipan Point, especially for geology enthusiasts, is the unparalleled exposure of the Grand Canyon Supergroup, a rare formation of tilted rock layers deep in the gorge that are over a billion years old. This, combined with one of the longest visible segments of the Colorado River, makes Lipan Point a must-see for capturing the canyon's immense depth, vibrant colors, and profound geologic history, particularly during sunrise and sunset.
